I finished two pairs of socks for Socktober. The first of these are the Bed Socks in Lemon Pattern Fancy Knit Stripe, from Nancy Bush's Knitting Vintage Socks.
Normally my socks are in the 60-64 sts range, but this pattern is knit on 72 sts, and I really didn't want to change it because there's patterning on the flap and gusset, and the heel has neat ribbing. Thin yarn to the rescue! The thinnest sock yarn in my stash was Rio de la Plata's sock yarn (in French blue). This yarn gets the prize for most appearances on this blog; it was used for the baby moccasins and to embroider the Argyle socks. There was only 80 g left in the skein so I didn't make the leg long and skipped the leg shaping.
The other thing that made this yarn ideal for bed socks is that while it is super soft, it is also super prone to felting, so they wouldn't do too well when tread upon. The orange pair I made last year were worn about ten times, and had been put in the washer. The top of the foot has fared well, but the soles were stiff after a few wears.
Having the pattern on the soles makes these the stretchiest socks ever! It also meant taking longer to knit too, compared to the st st soles normally found in other socks.
But I like them just the way they are! :)
Those socks always intrigue me when I flip through that book, but then I see the number 72 and think twice about them.

Oh, that picture with one sock on the blocker and the other one relaxed and scrunchy is very cool! They look great, and i hope they wear well for you.
